Soap Sculpture Contest Supports Water for People

You know how airlines are always offering those last minute weekend flight specials?
Here is something REALLY special, and it benefits a great cause and you'll have more fun than sitting in business class on one of those cheap flights! But time is of the essence...please send in your enry form now.

It doesn't take long, were not asking for your weekend like the airlines special does.....only a few minutes of your time to fill out the entry form, and commit to helping Water for Humanity. Then all you need is a bar of soap, or if you really want to be extravagant and have a soap party (!) just go to a art/craft store and get 5lb block(s) of glycerin soap and then melt it, color it, mold it, carve it, or whatever and turn it into something your group thinks up.

This is about imagination not perfection...the theme is Water for People – a celebration of clean water for all people. Entries can be as simple as a classic soap bar carving to an elaborate multi-media creation using soap, or a mix of soap-related and other found or created objects.

Need some ideas to get you going? This is how easy it is...take a bar of ivory soap, carve one end to resemble the prow of a boat, put a tooth pick on it for a mast, and attach your business card for the sail. See?

Still too much work? Use a warmed but small sharp object to carving your company name into a bar of soap.

Simpler still? How about a minimalist sculpture... the smallest perfect square you can make, with you company's initials engraved in it, then place it in a fancy velvet box like a piece of jewelry comes in.

We're confidant you can think of much better things, but really, it is participating that is important. If you want to go for the big time and you've gotten 1 or more of those 5lb block(s) of glycerin soap...you could melt it and put it in a breakaway mold,or make a tiered cake out of it, or make a scale model of the your treatment plant, your logo, or the the Queen Mary!

Here’s how it works:

  • We need 30 teams to bring their creations to the fall conference in Seaside, Oregon. Each team will solicit donations to support their entry into the contest (a minimum of $50).
  • At the conference an elite panel of art connoisseurs (maybe not soooo elite!) will award prizes in 3 categories.
  • All entries will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
  • Entry fees and all auction proceeds will go toward our goal of raising $4000+ for Water for People. The highest bidders can proudly display their prize at the treatment plant, city hall or office lobby.
  • Entering the contest provides a great public relations message for your agency!

You can do it! Creating an entry makes a great team building exercise at work—or enlist your favorite scout troop, church group or book club to help. Google away and find inspiration on the internet, dust off those college art appreciation text books, ask your kids for help, visit your nearby art museum.  How about a big water drop, a H20 molecule model, a fountain gushing soapflake water; a Tromp L’ oeil version in soap of a humble roll of TP, a model pump, a water jug, a fire hydrant... no limits except portability.

The Rules

  1. Your sculpture should be at least 50% soap in any form, shape, or color.
  2. Keep each entry with its shipping container under 70 pounds and with a total length plus girth dimension under 130 inches is a good rule of thumb. If you design a monumental sculpture, make sure the parts can be disassembled for shipping.
  3. Have fun by challenging a peer agency or firm to beat your best entry.
  4. Come prepared to bid like the pros do at Sotheby’s. Have your money ready. Fund raise in advance to make sure you’re a serious bidder.
