Innovative Natural Treatment Solutions to Protect Streams From Contaminants of Emerging Concern

The environmental and health impacts of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CEC) are not yet fully understood, however recent studies increasingly raise concerns around the cumulative health impacts of unique combinations of chemicals and the difficulty of managing non-point sources of pollution. While there has been limited comprehensive research on CECs that that are commonly present in stormwater, the data that does exist indicates the concentrations of CECs can be substantial. Around the Pacific Northwest, treatment wetlands have been used in the past to provide benefits of pollution removal via numerous mechanisms. This presentation will highlight the design process and use of engineered treatment wetlands to manage CECs, while also providing green space for public education and recreation.
